About Misty
This week, Alysha rushed her beloved dog Misty to the animal hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery for pyometra, a life-threatening infection of the uterus.
Surgeons were able to remove Misty’s uterus and save her life, but the infection has impacted some of her organs. Misty needs to be hospitalized continuously while receiving fluids, antibiotics, and being monitored closely in order to survive and fully heal.
Misty is Alysha's son's emotional support companion animal and helps him with severe anxiety. "I hoped having a companion would give him comfort and someone to spend time with, but I never imagined how much she would impact all of us," Alysha told the VHS. “She has a gentle, intuitive nature and always seems to know when someone is having a hard day. She’ll quietly come and sit beside you for hours, offering comfort without needing anything in return. She is incredibly gentle with other animals, especially smaller ones, and will lower herself to their level to play softly with them. People often tell me she must have been very well trained, but the truth is, that kindness is just who she is. We truly cannot imagine our lives without her."
Alysha regrets that she wasn't aware of the risk of pyometra, and hadn't had Misty spayed because of the high costs in her home province. While living on disability payments, Alysha budgets carefully and prioritizes Misty's well-being, but accessing affordable veterinary care has been such a challenge. This experience has been unexpected and financially overwhelming, which is why Alysha has reached out to the Vancouver Humane Society for help managing the cost of Misty's emergency care.
Misty has been there for this family through their hardest days. Can you donate today to help Misty recover and return home to the family who loves her so dearly?
